Celebration of South Atlanta

Basketball Tournament Originally called Brownsville, the South Atlanta community is a historic African American neighborhood created and designed by Clark University (now Clark Atlanta University) and Gammon Theological Seminary.  The two schools were an important part of the African American community in Atlanta.  During the 1940s, the two historic black educational institutions were forced to relocate to keep their doors open and the former college became a beautiful campus for the main high school.  When the local GM Plant eventually left as well, the majority of neighborhood homeowners and leaders followed.  The community center, formerly a movie theater, soon became a liquor store and hub for drug distribution.A group of seniors in the neighborhood prayed for years for their community.  When they heard about the work of FCS Urban Ministries in East Lake, they asked FCS to purchase and rehab the community center, now the Gateway Building.  The neighborhood also invited Charis Community Housing to serve in the overall transformation of South Atlanta.

Charis has committed to listening to the voices of local residents and dreaming about the future of this beautiful urban neighborhood called South Atlanta.
