Volunteers

Throw on your boots  and grab your lunch box – we’ve got work to do!  Charis’ volunteer season runs from April through September.

Your church, business, or organization would be a welcome partner to volunteer in the following areas:

  • Building or renovating homes
  • Painting
  • Landscaping projects
  • Cleaning rental homes
  • Neighborhood clean-ups

Individuals with specific skills can also connect by becoming a Vocational Partner.

Most projects require volunteers to be 18+ years old, although some are open to those 14-17.  Construction experience is not a requirement to volunteer with Charis.  Learn more by searching our FAQs below, or contact our Volunteer Coordinator. (heather null@null chariscommunity NULL.org)

Get involved now as an individual or as a group by completing the Charis Volunteer Form at the bottom of this page.

FAQs for Volunteer Groups

Do I have to have construction experience to help with this project?

All volunteers willing to serve are invited to join.  Experience is not required.  Other roles, such as landscaping, site host, food assistance, cleaning, etc., need to be filled and are available for those without construction experience.

How old do I have to be to volunteer? Can I bring my children to the work site?

Most projects require volunteers to be 18+ at the site.  Collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator for projects available for 14-17 year olds.  Only children meeting the minimum age requirement may join you at the site.

Can I sign up my group as a team?

Absolutely!  Be sure to register as a group.

I’m a licensed professional. Are my services needed?

Yes!  If you are skilled in related trades (framing, plumbing, electrical, flooring, HVAC, landscaping, etc.), you may make an in-kind donation of your service.  Contact us (heather null@null chariscommunity NULL.org) for more information.

Do I need to bring tools?

It is preferable for you to bring the following tools, if possible:

  • hammer
  • nail apron
  • pencil
  • work gloves
  • utility knife
  • tape measure

Other tools needed for specific jobs (i.e. framing, vinyl siding, painting, etc.) will be listed in your work confirmation.  If you or your group does not have tools, Charis has some to loan to you as well.

How should I dress?

It’s important to wear close-toed shoes or hard-soled and toed boots, if possible.  Wear weather-appropriate clothes (layers work best), and be prepared to get dirty!

Will lunch be provided?

Please bring a lunch with you.

What do I need to bring?

Please make sure you bring or wear the following:

  • close-toed shoes
  • long-sleeve shirts for those doing landscaping
  • gloves
  • protective eyewear
  • tools, if possible (check list)
  • lunch, if needed

What if I can’t stay for the whole shift?

Work days generally begin at 8:30 am and end at 1 pm.  Please plan to stay for the entire shift.  If you cannot, that is okay.  Please notify your volunteer coordinator ahead of time.

How much physical intensity should I expect?

No one will be expected to lift or climb beyond their comfort zone.  Every project’s needs vary, but there are other roles available for those with physical limitations.

What if it’s raining at the time of my shift?

We do work in the rain, but not in stormy or threatening weather. If there is any question at the start of a work day, please call our Volunteer Coordinator, Heather (heather null@null chariscommunity NULL.org), at 404-627-4304 for up-to-date information.  Sometimes indoor work is available at the site that can continue.

Is there a bus stop nearby?

Most work sites are near a MARTA stop.  For our work in South Atlanta, Buses 55 and 155 run in the area.

Questions / Cancellations

If you have questions or become unable to work your shift, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Heather (heather null@null chariscommunity NULL.org).
